On February 1, 2020, a regional seminar was held at the Otia Ioseliani First Public School in Tskaltubo on the topic: “Written-Summative Assignments and Formative Assessment”. Secondary school teachers from Tskaltubo, Kutaisi, Samtredia, Tkibuli and Vani schools were invited to attend the seminar.

In order to introduce the participants with the Danish teaching practice, the regional seminar was led by Ekaterine Chelidze, a mentor teacher who had participated in the Danish-Georgian exchange program.

At the opening of the seminar, Maia Kobakhidze, on behalf of the organization, thanked the host school principal, Ms. Fakizo Panchulidze, for her support and assistance in holding the regional seminar.

The regional seminar is an integral part of the Danish-Georgian Assistance and Support Project “Development of School and Education Policy Advocacy Opportunities in Georgia in Co-operation with ESFTUG". The seminar program is based on a combination of written assignments and assessment methods developed and adapted jointly by secondary school teachers from Denmark and Georgia with a variety of modules for improving student results and teaching and learning process.

In the opening part, the participants of the regional seminar were presented the goals and objectives of the Danish-Georgian project, emphasizing the role of teachers in introducing modern methods, introducing mechanisms promoting academic freedom of teachers and the development of school education policy.

Ekaterine Chelidze, the coordinator of the seminar, together with her colleagues, discussed in two sessions the methods from Danish practice tested by Georgian teachers in relation to written assignments and summative assessment.

Among the presented materials were “Flyum's 5 and 7 Corners”, 20 ideas for increasing student engagement and motivation; games as a pedagogical method of teaching (various models of games); modules for developing communication skills, methods of student self-assessment and formative assessment. Teachers individually performed the model samples and discussed the recommendations around the topic.

The aim of the Danish project is to disseminate modern approaches and mechanisms of teaching and learning. Therefore, the teachers expressed their readiness to introduce the information received at the regional seminar to their colleagues and in their own practice. They also agreed to present the practical results obtained with the help of the project coordinator.

In the final part of the regional seminar, teachers of schools in different counties were given the opportunity to receive interesting information from Maia Kobakhidze about the ongoing processes in the education system and the results achieved by the activities of trade unions. Maia Kobakhidze talked to the teachers about the visions and approaches of the trade union, listened to their views and expectations. Teachers unanimously welcomed the activities of the trade union in the direction of advocating for the interests of teachers.
